About Paul "Bead" Spencer

I am a landscape painter who has been working with glass for almost 20 years.  My focus is on the spiritual apprehension of nature as expressed through color, design, and texture.

I work directly from nature.  I start with a painting on canvas.  I capture the rhythm and energy of the landscape as a blueprint for the glass.  I emphasize color in my painting to evoke the vibrancy of glassblowing colors.  I use a variety of textures in my glass to reflect the impasto of the painting.  In this way my glasswork retains the immediacy and energy of the painting.

As a glass bead maker, I take a painterly approach to my work. I believe that glass is the perfect medium for a colorist because of its ability to transmit and reflect light.

I choose to work with the colors and textures of the natural world and apply them in layers to create vibrancy and depth. Working intuitively and spontaneously, I try to capture the essence of the landscape.

My bead strands can be used as a tool for meditation, as an art object, or worn as an adornment as a "wearable landscape."  I call most of my work "inspiration beads" or "prayer beads" because, for me, they each represent small offerings to the creative spirit. When combined in a circle, the "rosary" becomes the painting.

I base my work on the teachings of Vincent Van Gogh as expressed in his letters to his young artist friend, Émile Bernard.

I currently live and work in Corning, New York and in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
